From Latin meaning "little hand"; dating back to the 12th century, hands were drawn in the margins of manuscripts to highlight important passages. I loved seeing these often-ornate drawings in centuries old libraries and historical homes. These hands, originally painted on kraft paper, are a modern take on an ancient form of emphasis.
